LUBRICATION
LIGHT TRUCK: 1989 and after BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F SUPER DUTY, F-150-350 SERIES, F-47, F-53
ISSUE: The E40D automatic transmission may experience overheating and/or internal damage due to a lack of rear lubrication caused by restriction of the transmission fluid flow through the transmission cooling system. Main causes for transmission cooler flow restrictions are:
^ Improper use or installation of aftermarket auxiliary transmission coolers.
^ Failure to properly flush contaminants from the transmission cooler lines and cooler after performing repairs to a failed transmission.
^ Improper routing or restriction of the heater bypass system.
ACTION: Inspect the transmission auxiliary oil coolers to be sure they are properly installed, and that cooling hoses are properly routed and no kinks or restrictions exist. Refer to the following procedures for service details.
