ENGINE/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS MANUAL - 1989 - PAGE 17-144 - 7.3L ENGINE WITH E40D TRANSMISSION - ENGINE RPM SENSOR DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES REVISED
LIGHT TRUCK: 1989 E-250, E-350, F-250, F-350
ISSUE: The 1989 Engine Emissions Diagnostic Shop Manual has been revised. The procedures for diagnosing Self-Test Code 23 on 7.3L Diesel vehicles equipped with E40D transmissions has been updated.
The revised procedure directs the technician to perform Pinpoint Test DJ1 (Engine RPM Sensor Diagnostic Procedure) when a Code 23 and no Engine I.D. Code is received while performing the Key On Engine Running Self Test (KOER). The Code 23 generated is actually a KOEO code (the vehicle is in Key On Engine Off test mode and not in Key On Engine Running test mode at that moment).
Previously the DQ Pinpoint Test instructed the technician to service the Fuel Injection Pump Lever (FIPL) sensor when a Self-Test Code 23 was received while performing the Key On Engine Running Self-Test (KOER).
NOTE: A diesel RPM sensor failure may cause the Self-Test to perform Key On Engine Off (KOEO) instead of the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Test. If this occurs, do not interrupt the Self-Test. Allow the test to run to completion. If this test is interrupted, any continuous Self-Test codes in memory will be erased.
ACTION: Refer to the pages following this TSB article for the revised diagnostic procedures.
