This article is being republished in its entirety to expand the coverage to include 1988-89 Broncos and 1989 F-Super Duty/F-Super Duty Stripped F53 Motor Home Chassis trucks.
ISSUE: A noise from the engine compartment that sounds like the transmission is downshifting or sounds like a momentary increase in engine RPM may be coming from the engine cooling fan clutch. The noise is produced when the engine cooling fan clutch engages.
ACTION: Install a new design modulating fan clutch that gradually engages to reduce fan clutch noise. Refer to the following procedure for removal and installation details. Use the fan clutch application chart to determine the correct service part.

1. Remove the fan shroud from the radiator.
2. Remove the four (4) screws holding the clutch assembly to the water pump hub, Figure 1.
3. Remove the clutch and fan assembly from the vehicle.
4. Remove the four (4) screws holding the fan to the clutch and separate the pieces, Figure 1.
5. Position the fan on the new modulating clutch. Refer to the application chart for the correct service part number.
6. Re-install the four (4) screws that hold the fan to the clutch. Tighten the screws to a torque of 12-18 lb.ft. (17-24 N-m).
7. Position the clutch and fan assembly to the water pump hub.
8. Re-install the four (4) screws that hold the clutch and fan assembly to the water pump hub. Tighten the screws to a torque of 12-18 lb.ft. (17-24 N-m).
9. Re-install the fan shroud.
