This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1989/90 E/F Series 4x2's with one-piece driveshaft and E4OD Automatic Transmission.
Safety Defects
Your truck may have been built with an output shaft snap ring which may break inside the transmission.
Problems
If the snap ring in your truck is broken, the park mechanism may not function when the shift lever is placed in the "PARK" position. If this occurs and your truck is parked without setting the parking brake, the vehicle could roll as if in neutral - creating the possibility of a vehicle crash or personal injury.
WARNING
ALWAYS SET THE PARKING BRAKE FULLY WHEN PARKING THE VEHICLE. DO NOT USE THE PARK POSITION IN PLACE OF THE PARKING BRAKE. ALWAYS TURN OFF THE IGNITION WHENEVER LEAVING THE VEHICLE. IF YOU DO NOT TAKE THESE PRECAUTIONS, ESPECIALLY DURING THE TIME PERIOD UNTIL YOUR TRUCK IS INSPECTED BY YOUR DEALER, YOUR TRUCK MAY MOVE UNEXPECTEDLY AND INJURE SOMEONE.
Repairs
At no cost to you, your dealer will inspect your transmission and if necessary, replace the snap ring.
How Long Will It Take?
The time needed to repair your truck is about one hour. However, due to service scheduling times, your dealer may need your vehicle for one full working day.
Call Your Dealer
Your dealer currently has replacement parts for all trucks equipped with 7.3L diesel engines. Call your dealer and ask for a service date.
Replacement parts for trucks with other engines will be available approximately August 15, 1990. Owners should contact their dealer for a service date.
If your dealer does not have the parts in stock, they can be ordered before scheduling your service date. Parts would be expected to arrive within a week.
When you bring your truck in, give the dealer this letter.
If you misplace this letter, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.
Changed Address Or Sold Truck?
If you have, please fill out enclosed prepaid postcard and mail it to us.
If the dealer doesn't make the repair promptly and without charge, you may contact the Ford Parts and Service Division Office whose address is shown in your Owner Guide booklet. You may send a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, SW, Washington, DC 20590 or call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline 800-424-9393 (Washington DC area residents may call 426-0123).
We regret the inconvenience this service may cause you, but we want you to have the work done for your safety and satisfaction with your Ford-built truck.
