Failure Mode Effects Management (FMEM)

Failure mode effects management is an alternate system strategy in the Electronic Control Assembly (ECA), designed to allow improved vehicle operation should one or more sensor inputs fail.
When a sensor input is perceived to be out of limits by the ECA, an alternative strategy will be initiated. The ECA will substitute a fixed in-limit sensor value and will continue to monitor the faulty sensor input. If the faulty sensor operates within limits, the ECA will return to the normal engine running strategy. The malfunction indicator light (check engine light) will remain ON when failure mode effects management is in effect. A code indication without the malfunction indicator light illuminated prior to activating the self-test indicates a past failure that is not present at the time of testing, these codes should only be addressed if the codes can be recreated in the continuous test mode. If there is more than one service code present, the lowest number malfunction code is displayed first. The remaining codes are displayed in numerical order. After repairing a failure, turn off ignition switch and disconnect the battery ground cable. Depress brake pedal for at least five seconds to erase the memory of a malfunction code.
