Repairs

Drive Dog:





Disassembly, Non-Turbo Engine
1. After removing distributor from engine, remove rotor, cover and gasket.
2. Mark position of lower shaft to drive dog, then remove drive dog retaining pin and the drive dog.

Puller Tool:





3. Remove signal rotor retaining screw, then using Puller D80L-1002-L or equivalent, remove the signal rotor and pin from the upper shaft. Note the direction of the arrow stamped into the rotor.

Pick-up Coil:





4. Disconnect pickup coil wires, noting wire location for proper installation. Remove the wiring harness from distributor housing.
5. Remove pickup coil retaining screws, then the pickup coil.

Vacuum Diaphragm, Coil Mounting Plate:





6. Remove pickup coil mounting plate retaining screws, then the mounting plate.
7. Remove stator plate E-clips, then remove vacuum diaphragm mounting screws and the vacuum diaphragm.

Stator Plate:





8. Remove stator plate retaining screws, then the stator plate from the upper shaft.

Lower Shaft:




Spring, Weight:





9. Remove lower shaft retaining screws, then the lower shaft and seal from the distributor housing. Then remove two E-clips, springs, weights, bearing and retainer from the lower shaft.

Assembly, Upper & Lower Shaft:




Bearing Retainer, Recesses:





Assembly, Non-Turbo Engine
1. Install a new seal into the distributor housing.
2. Install bearing, retainer, weights, springs and E-clips to the lower shaft. Ensure weight pivot pins engage the advance mechanism.
3. Install upper shaft onto lower shaft, then seat the shaft assembly to the distributor housing and install shaft retainer screws. Ensure bearing retainer aligns with housing recess.

Stator Plate:





4. Install stator plate, vacuum diaphragm, E-clips, pickup coil mounting plate and the wiring harness.
5. Install pickup coil and connect the wiring harness.

Timing Mark:




Alignment Mark:





6. Using a socket and the palm of your hand, press the signal rotor and pin onto the upper shaft until it bottoms against shoulder of upper shaft. Note the direction of the arrow stamped into the signal rotor.
7. Install the signal rotor retaining screw.
8. Align the groove in the drive dog with the alignment mark on the distributor housing.
9. Install the retaining pin, then install cover, gasket, and rotor.


Disassembly, Turbo Engine
The distributor assembly used with turbocharged engines cannot be disassembled. If the distributor is malfunctioning or defective, it must be replaced as an assembly.
