Alternator: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the catalytic converter.
3. Disconnect wiring terminals from back of alternator. Stator and field wiring terminals are push-on type. After depressing lock tab, push-on type terminal should be pulled straight off to prevent damage.
4. Loosen the alternator adjustment bolt and the through bolt enough to allow the alternator to pivot. Remove the alternator drive belt.
5. Remove the alternator adjustment bracket, lock bolt and through bolt.
6. While holding the alternator to prevent it from falling, remove the alternator by sliding it between the steering gear and the right halfshaft.
Installation
1. Slide alternator between the right halfshaft and the steering gear.
2. Position alternator on the pivot bracket.
3. Install the alternator through bolt and tighten finger-tight.
4. Install the alternator drive belt. Install the alternator adjustment bracket adjustment jack screw, and lock bolt.
5. Tighten the alternator adjustment jack screw until the total drive belt deflection is as specified with a force of 98N (22 lb).
New Belt: 6-8mm(0.24-0.31 in) Used Belt: 7-9mm (0.27-0.35 in)
6. Tighten the through bolt to 37-52 Nm (27-38 lb-ft).
7. Tighten the alternator adjusting bracket bolt to
19-25 Nm (14-19 lb-ft).
8. Connect wiring terminals to alternator. Make sure two wire connectors lock in place.
9. Connect negative battery cable.
10. Install the catalytic converter.
11. Connect the negative battery cable.
