LAMP-HEADLAMP COVERS INOPERATIVE
NO START-2.2L-WATER AND CORROSION IN WIRING CONNECTOR
WIRING-CONNECTOR-ELECTRICAL CONCERNS RELATED TO WATER AND CORROSION-REPAIR PROCEDURE
FORD: 1989 PROBE
ISSUE: Water may enter the C159, C160, C161 or C162 wiring connectors resulting in shorted and corroded pins. This may cause various types of electrical concerns such as:
^ Battery goes dead
^ Headlamp covers are inoperative
^ No start due to a dead battery
The wiring connectors join the body and engine wiring looms. They are located in the area of the right and left headlamps. A diagram of the connectors and the circuits routed through them is shown on page 67 of the 1989 Probe EVTM.
Figure 1:
ACTION: Inspect and repair the wiring connectors and wires, Figure 1. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Remove the battery to gain access to the connectors.
2. Remove the coolant recovery bottle to gain access to the connectors.
3. Separate the four (4) wire connectors and inspect them for water or corrosion.
4. If only water is found with no corrosion, clean and reassemble the wire connectors as follows:
a. Empty any water from the connectors.
b. Dry the connectors using compressed air.
c. Clean the connectors and terminals using a suitable electrical contact cleaner.
5. Inspect the terminal pins to determine if any of them are corroded beyond a serviceable state of repair.
Figure 2:
6. If any pins are not usable, proceed as follows:
a. Remove the wires from the connector.
b. Splice the wires together outside the connector shell.
c. Install a waterproof butt splice connector. Refer to Figure 2 and TSB 86-3-11 for installation details.
7. Coat the terminals of the wire connectors with dielectric grease (D7AZ-19A331-A).
Figure 3:
8. Re-connect the wiring connectors.
9. Apply electrical tape to the wire harness and wire connectors as follows:
a. Wrap the tape starting at the harness and ending at the connector.
b. Overlap both the harness and the connector to provide good sealing, Figure 3.
10. Re-install the coolant recovery bottle and battery.
11. Re-install the battery.
