Subject:
Safety Recall 90S10 - E4OD Transmission Output Shaft Snap Ring.
Affected Vehicles
Certain 1989/90 E/F Series (excluding 5.0L engines) 4x2's with one-piece driveshaft and E4OD transmission.
Inspect the transmission I.D. Tag for build date code (see Attachment IV) to see if the transmission requires repair.
Reasons For Recall
A snap ring on the output shaft may break and cause the transmission "PARK" mechanism to malfunction.
If the snap ring is broken, the parking pawl may not engage the parking gear when the shift lever is placed in the "PARK" position. If this occurs and the driver parks the vehicle without setting the parking brake, the vehicle could roll as if in neutral - creating the possibility of a vehicle crash or personal injury.
WARNING
DRIVERS SHOULD ALWAYS SET THE PARKING BRAKE FULLY WHEN PARKING THE VEHICLE. THEY SHOULD NOT USE THE "PARK" POSITION IN PLACE OF THE PARKING BRAKE. THEY SHOULD ALSO TURN OFF THE IGNITION WHENEVER LEAVING THE VEHICLE. IF THEY DO NOT TAKE THESE PRECAUTIONS, ESPECIALLY DURING THE TIME PERIOD UNTIL THESE SAFETY RECALL PROCEDURES ARE COMPLETED, THE VEHICLE MAY MOVE UNEXPECTEDLY AND INJURE SOMEONE.
To correct this condition, dealers are to replace the snap ring on the output shaft with a new, high strength snap ring and install a revised transmission extension housing.
