Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Gasoline Engines

^ Test has begun when the identification code has been received. (This code consists of the # of cylinders divided by 2 plus an added zero.)

Example: A 4 cylinder would be 4 divided by 2 = 2 plus added 0 would = 20. A 6 cylinder would be a code of 30. An 8 cylinder would be a code of 40.

^ After the identification code, the operator must cycle the overdrive cancel switch then depress and release the service brake pedal.

^ A single output pulse (10) is sent to signal the operator to quickly press (goose) the throttle to wide open, and immediately release.

^ Service codes are then sent.

^ Self test then enters a two minute period for throttle adjustment. During this two minute period the operator can enter the throttle adjust mode by ungrounding and then grounding STI (release and then depress center bufton on STAR tester). The throttle adjust mode allows the technician to check and adjust the throttle plate hard set to a desired RPM.

6. Engine running wiggle test (entered automatically upon completion of engine running self test)

The wiggle test allows the technician to attempt to re-create an intermittent fault. Tap, move, and wiggle the suspected sensor and/or wire harness. When a fault is detected the STO will be turned on as long as the fault is present. STO on will cause the STAR tester to sound a continuous tone. (The check engine light will also light up).
