Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Description and Operation

The diesel injection system consists of a lift pump that draws fuel from the supply tank through a fuel/water separator. The fuel is then pumped through the fuel heater, and the fuel filter to the injection pump inlet. The injection pump then distributes the fuel under high pressure to the injection nozzles. On each nozzle is a fuel return fitting. A line runs off the fuel filter, then connects to the right bank of injection nozzles. This line connects at the rear left of the engine to the fuel return lines from the injection pump and left bank of injection nozzles. Fuel is then returned to the fuel supply tank.

The fuel filter contains a continuous vent (orifice bleed-off system) which aids starting by eliminating the need to manually prime the fuel filter. A vacuum switch is incorporated into the fuel filter header which will activate a light in the instrument panel indicating the need for filter replacement. The water separator portion of the filter assembly has a probe which will activate an instrument panel light when the filter requires draining at the water and sediment drain located on the bottom of the assembly.
