Brake Pedal - Excessive Travel or Pedal Fade

BRAKES - EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL OR FADE - TRUCKS BUILT PRIOR TO 5/1/91

LIGHT TRUCK:
1989-91 E-250, E-350, F-250, F-350

ISSUE:
Excessive brake pedal travel or brake pedal fade may occur during application, when heavily loaded, on steep downhill grades. This may be caused by the brake caliper piston.

ACTION:
Replace both brake caliper pistons with the new phenolic pistons. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Perform diagnosis for excessive brake pedal travel or pedal fade. Refer to the Light Truck Shop Manual, Section 12-01, for diagnostic procedures and adjustments that may be necessary.

2. If adjustment does not correct concern, replace the piston in the brake caliper with a phenolic piston. Refer to the Light Truck Shop Manual. Section 12-24, for service details.

NOTE:
WHEN REPLACING THE PISTON, YOU MUST ALSO REPLACE THE SEAL AND BOOT.

3. Check the brake caliper bore for damage or scoring. If damaged or scored, replace the caliper.
