Technical Instructions

Correction of wiring connections and/or replacement of burned out fuses and bulbs is not covered by this program.

Description of Daytime Running Light (DRL) System Operation

The DRL System is designed to turn the Hi beam headlights ON with a reduced light output, and without illuminating the high beam indicator lamp in the instrument panel when the following conditions are met:

^ The vehicle is running.
^ The parking brake is fully released.
^ The headlight switch is in OFF position.

NOTE:
If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic lighting system, the DRL System is active until the automatic system turns on the headlights.

DRL Module Removal and Installation Procedure
(Refer to Daytime Running Light Module Location Table.)

Refer to the Vehicle's 1990 or 1991 Shop Manual, Section 32 "Lighting System", for Removal and Installation instructions. Mutilate and scrap the removed DRL module.

NOTE:
For the 1989 Thunderbird and Cougar cars refer to the 1990 Model Year Shop Manual.

After Installing The Replacement DRL Module Verify DRL System Function As Follows
Ensure the vehicle's road wheels are blocked to preclude inadvertent vehicle movement.

^ Manual transmission in NEUTRAL.

^ Automatic Transmission in PARK. (Neutral on Heavy Trucks with Allison automatic.)

1. Parking brake applied and headlight switch OFF, start engine.

^ The headlights (Hi or Lo beam) should not be illuminated.

2. Parking brake released and headlight switch OFF, engine running.

^ The high beams should be ON at reduced intensity.

NOTE:
A comparison check for full intensity can be made using flash-to-pass or by putting headlight switch ON and switching to high beams.

a. Turn on Park Lights.

The high beams should be ON at reduced intensity.

The high beam indicator should NOT be ON.

b. Turn on headlights (LOW BEAMS).

The low beams should be ON at full intensity. The high beams should be OFF. The high beam indicator should NOT be ON.

c. Turn on headlights (HIGH BEAMS).

The high beams should be ON at full intensity. The high beam indicator should be ON.

NOTE:
LL and LTL models use quad highlight systems and are not affected by this program.

Daytime Running Light Module Locations

1989 MODEL YEAR (CARS/LIGHT TRUCKS) LOCATION

Thunderbird/Cougar In front of driver's side radiator support,
vertically mounted behind bumper.

1990-1991 MODEL YEAR LOCATION

Thunderbird/Cougar In front of driver's side radiator support,
vertically mounted behind bumper.

Tempo/Topaz Inside on the RH side radiator support,
vertically mounted below radiator cap.

Ford Mustang Under the LH front fender apron, directly below
the battery.

Taurus/Sable On the LH front fender apron, directly under
the battery. (Remove LH side fender liner for
access.)

Ford Escort (1190 MY Only) On the RH side of the radiator support.

Ranger/Bronco II/Explorer Inside on the LH side radiator support, at top
near washer fluid reservoir.

F-Series Light Truck/Super Duty/Bronco Inside the LH radiator support below the horn
assembly.

Aerostar Inside the LH front fender apron, behind the
battery.

Econoline Inside the LH radiator support.

1990/91 MEDIUM/HEAVY TRUCK SERIES LOCATION

"F" (Cab and Cowl) Behind RH side instrument panel.

"C" Behind RH side instrument panel.

"CL" (Single Headlights) Behind instrument panel RH side.

"CF" (Cargo) Under hood beside windshield washer bottle.

"L" Inside engine compartment left side bulkhead.

NOTE:
LL and LTL models use quad highlight systems and are not affected by this program.
