Removal and Installation

1. Shift transmission into neutral.
2. Remove carpet or floor mat, then boot and bezel assembly from transmission opening cover.
3. Remove upper shift lever from lower shift lever.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Disconnect speedometer cable and back-up lamp switch.
6. Drain oil from transmission and transfer case if equipped.
7. On 4WD models, remove transfer case.
8. On all models, secure transmission with suitable transmission jack.
9. Disconnect driveshaft and clutch linkage from transmission.
10. On F-Super Duty models, remove parking transmission brake from transmission.
11. On all models, remove transmission rear insulator, lower retainer and crossmember.
12. Remove transmission to engine retaining bolts, then transmission by pulling rearward until input shaft clears engine flywheel.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install guide studs in front case and raise transmission until input shaft splines are aligned with clutch disc splines, remove guide studs. Torque bolts to 40-50 ft lbs.
b. Torque insulator and retainer bolts to 45-40 ft lbs. and nuts to 50-70 ft lbs. Torque upper shift lever to lower shift lever to 16-24 ft lbs.
