Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Pry out trim insert in the center of the steering wheel cover.
3. Remove steering wheel attaching nut, then the attaching screws located to the left and right of the steering column stud.
4. Remove two screws from the back of the steering wheel spokes, freeing steering wheel cover assembly, with cover bracket and horn buttons. Disconnect horn wire and remove cover assembly.
5. Mark steering wheel and steering column shaft for assembly reference and remove wheel with steering wheel puller tool No. T67L-3600-A or equivalent.
6. Remove five screws from lower steering column cover, and remove upper and lower steering column covers.
7. Release wiring harness clip and unplug four harness connectors from the back of the combination switch.
8. From below the steering column, loosen band clamp securing switch hub to steering column jacket.
9. Pull combination switch assembly off the steering column.

10. Remove screws securing instrument cluster bezel and move bezel rearward, Fig. 29.
11. Disconnect switch electrical connectors from switches on instrument cluster bezel, then remove instrument cluster bezel.
12. On models equipped with tachometer, disconnect tachometer at rear of instrument panel.
13. On models without tachometer,disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle.
14. On all models, remove instrument cluster attaching screws.
15. Move cluster rearward and disconnect cluster electrical wiring.
16. On models without tachometer, disconnect speedometer cable from the instrument cluster.
17. On all models, remove instrument cluster from vehicle.

18. On 1989 models, remove spacer brace bolts under the steering column, Fig. 30, then remove spacer brace.
19. On 1990-91 models, remove steering column inner shield attaching nuts, Fig. 31, then remove shield.
20. Remove two shield bracket attaching bolts, then remove bracket.
21. On all models, remove left and right heater ducts, Fig. 32.
22. Remove screws securing glove box hinges to the glove box, then the glove box.
23. Remove cover from fuse panel, then the screws securing fuse panel.
24. Push the fuse panel forward, but do not remove fuse panel.
25. Remove shift lever knob, then the console attaching screws, Fig. 33. Remove only the three screws shown in the figure. The remaining screw secures the console stiffener bracket.
26. Remove the center console.
27. On 1990-91 models, remove support bracket attaching bolts and nut below ashtray assembly, then remove bracket.
28. On all models, remove radio and heater-A/C control bezel attaching screws.
29. Remove two screws securing radio to instrument panel.
30. Pull radio rearward and disconnect antenna lead and wiring connectors.
31. Remove rubber mounting insulator from the radio ground stud.
32. Remove nut and radio ground wire from ground stud.
33. Remove radio from the vehicle.
34. Remove four heater-A/C control assembly attaching screws.

35. Reaching through the glove box opening, disconnect recirc/fresh air door cable at the door operating lever, Fig. 34.
36. Disconnect mode selector cable at function control lever, Fig. 35.
37. Disconnect temperature control cable from control lever, Fig. 36.
38. Pull control assembly away from instrument panel, then disconnect blower motor, illumination lamp and lighter wiring connectors.

39. Remove snap in trim inserts concealing the instrument panel attaching bolts, Fig. 37.
40. Remove seven instrument panel attaching bolts and two attaching nuts, Fig. 38.
41. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors, and remove instrument panel.
42. Reverse procedure to install.
