Inspection Procedure
It is necessary to partially remove the instrument cluster to make a visual inspection of the lot number on the instrument cluster housing to determine if replacement is necessary.1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. If equipped with a tilt steering wheel (LX Model), release the tilt lock and lower the steering column. If not equipped with a tilt steering wheel, remove the upper steering column cover by removing the 4 screws from the half of the lower column cover closest to the steering wheel (figure 1).
3. Remove the five screws securing the instrument cluster bezel to the instrument panel (figure 2).
4. Pull the instrument cluster bezel away from the instrument panel (being careful not to break attaching clips at the top of the bezel).
5. If equipped with a rear window defroster, disconnect the wiring from connector at the switch and leave the switch in the bezel (figure 3).
6. If equipped with a rear window wiper, disconnect the wiring from connector at the switch and leave the switch in the bezel.
7. Remove the four screws securing the instrument cluster in the instrument panel (figure 4).
8. L Plus and LX model with tachometer - disconnect the speedometer cable at the back of the cluster. Reach behind the cluster, press the lock tab and disconnect the speedometer cable (figure 5).
L model without tachometer -- it is necessary to disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission (figure 6).
9. Pull the cluster away from the instrument panel only far enough to read the lot number located on the top of the cluster housing assembly (figure 7).
10. If the instrument cluster lot number is between 9102001 and 9112740 the printed circuit board must be replaced. If the cluster housing assembly lot number does not fall between these two numbers, reassemble the instrument cluster, complete the 1864 and release the car. If the instrument cluster printed circuit board requires replacement, continue with the following replacement procedure.
