Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Replacement Procedure

1. Lift the lock tabs and disconnect the two electrical connectors from the back of the instrument cluster (figure 8).

2. Remove the instrument cluster assembly.

3. Place the new printed circuit board next to the instrument cluster. Transfer all of the lamp bulbs to the new circuit board. Refer to figures 9 and 10.

NOTE:
Since the bulbs are different colors and sizes, transfer one bulb at a time from the old printed circuit board to the corresponding location on the new printed circuit board.

4. Remove the printed circuit board screws (figures 9 and 10). Note the different types of screws. Remove one screw at a time and transfer it into the new printed circuit board. Lift the old printed circuit board from the instrument cluster assembly and replace it with the new printed circuit board aligning the screws while lowering into place. Reattach the instrument panel lamp wires and tighten all of the retaining screws. See figures 9 and 10.

5. Place cluster in instrument panel. Reconnect electrical connectors and speedometer cable. Install four cluster screws, reconnect rear wiper and defroster switch connectors and install bezel and column trim.

6. Test the instrument cluster by turning the ignition key to the "ON" position. Check for illumination of the following indicator lamps.

a. Belts

b. Oil

c. Charge

d. Check engine

e. Brake (Park Brake must be set to illuminate)

f. Defroster (if equipped, switch must be on to illuminate)

7. Turn on the head lamps and test the high beam indicator by switching the dimmer switch. Verify that the instrument cluster illumination bulbs are working at this time.

8. Tune on the Hazard flashers and check the function of the turn signal indicator lamps.

9. Turn off all lamps, depress the brake pedal, release the park brake and turn the ignition key to crank while watching the Brake warning lamp. While cranking the engine the Brake warning lamp will illuminate. With the engine running, verify the tachometer function (if equipped). Verify that the fuel gauge functions and shut off the engine.

10. Check the function of the rear wiper/washer and rear defroster, if equipped.

11. If a failure is found recheck the printed circuit board connectors and bulbs for correct installation and retest.
