Crankshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect crankshaft timing sensor assembly electrical connectors from engine harness.
2. Remove large electrical connector from crankshaft timing sensor by prying out red retaining clip then removing the four wires.
3. Remove crankshaft pulley assembly by removing accessory drive belts, then four crankshaft pulley hub retaining bolts.
4. Remove timing belt outer cover, then rotate crankshaft until keyway is at ten o'clock position. This will place vane window of both inner and outer vane cups over crankshaft timing sensor assembly. The vane cups are attached to the crankshaft pulley hub assembly.
5. Remove two crankshaft timing sensor assembly retaining bolts, then the plastic wire harness retainer, securing timing sensor to the mounting bracket.
6. Remove crankshaft timing assembly by sliding electrical wires from behind inner timing belt cover.

INSTALLATION

1. Remove large electrical connector from new timing sensor assembly.
2. Position timing sensor, then slide electrical wires behind inner timing belt cover.
3. Hold sensor in place with retaining bolts.
NOTE: Do not tighten bolts at this time.
4. Install large electrical connector onto crankshaft timing sensor assembly.
NOTE: Ensure wires are installed correctly.
5. Connect both electrical connectors to engine harness.
6. Rotate crankshaft so the outer vane (located on the crankshaft pulley hub) engages both sides of the crankshaft Hall effect sensor positioner tool No. T89P-6316-A or equivalent.
7. Torque sensor retaining bolts to specification, refer to SPECIFICATIONS.
8. Rotate crankshaft so the vane on the crankshaft pulley hub is no longer engaged in the positioning tool. Remove crankshaft Hall effect sensor positioner.
9. Install new plastic wire harness retainer, securing crankshaft timing sensor harness to its mounting bracket. Trim any excess.
10. Install timing belt outer cover, then the crankshaft pulley assembly. Torque four attaching bolts to 12-18 lb. ft. Install drive belts.
