Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Technician Safety Information

1. Always wear appropriate eye protection.
2. Use caution when working near the exhaust to prevent the possibility of burns.
3. When servicing the fuel system use the following cautions:
a. Put a "CAUTION: FLAMMABLE" sign in the workshop.
b. Ensure the shop is equipped with a proper fire extinguisher.
c. Be sure to disconnect battery ground cable before any service work is done.
d. Exercise extreme care around the fuel system. If a fuel leak is suspected do not use your hand to verify (use a piece of absorbant paper), as the fuel system pressures can exceed 2,000 psi and a fuel stream of this pressure could cause serious injury.
e. Place a suitable container under the connection to be opened and wrap the connection with a rag.
f. Slowly open connection, allow pressure to escape, and catch any spilled fuel in an appropriate container.
NOTE: If available, use system bleed valve (schrader) to relieve pressure.
g. Disconnect line or hose, then plug all fittings.
h. Put any drained fuel in a non-breakable, fuel resistant container and put the lid on securely.
