Throttle Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Fuel Injection Pump Lever (FIPL) Sensor:





The Fuel Injection Pump Lever (FIPL) sensor is bolted to the fuel injection pump and is actuated by the throttle lever.
The FIPL sensor is used to provide the Transmission Electronic Control Assembly (TECA) with an electrical signal that is proportional to the amount of fuel being delivered. Based on this information, the TECA provides the proper shift scheduling and torque capacity.
If a problem arises in the FIPL sensor circuit, the electrical signal received by the TECA will be recognized as incorrect. When an out of specification signal is detected, the TECA will provide a high capacity operating mode that protects the transmission from potential damage. This operating mode includes: maximum Throttle Valve (TV) pressure, resulting in a harsh upshift and engagement; and a singular shift schedule regardless of accelerator pedal position, resulting in the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts occurring at a speed commensurate with a heavy (not wide open) throttle setting.
