Reverse Piston Return Spring
It is not uncommon to find a broken return spring for the reverse drum during teardown (Figure 1). Mazda has recently upgraded this spring to a thicker design (Mazda part number FU9A-19-551). The first design spring measured .035" in thickness while the second design spring measures .065".
The second design spring will retro-fit all years of G4A-EL, G4A-HL and 4EAT transaxles.
Note
Some units use one return spring while others use two springs stacked together. It is important to note that due to the extra thickness of the later spring you can install only one spring into the reverse drum.
