Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Brake Switch (Cruise Control): Testing and Inspection

Perform this test only when the brake application will not disconnect the speed control system.
1. Check operation of stop lamps by applying approximately 6 lbs. of effort to the brake pedal. If more than 6 lbs. is required, check brake pedal actuation and stop lamp switch.
2. If stop lamps do not function properly, the stop lamp switch, circuit fuse or bulbs must be checked.
3. If stop lamps function properly, check for battery voltage on white/purple wire (circuit 296) at the 6-way connector.
4. Depress brake pedal until stop lamps are lit.
5. On all models except Escort, Tempo and Topaz, check voltage on dark/green stripe lead at the 6-way connector. The difference between this and the voltage reading in step 3, must not exceed 1.5 volts.
6. On Escort, Tempo and Topaz, check voltage on red/light green lead at the 6-way connector. The difference between this and the voltage reading in step 3, must not exceed 1.5 volts.
7. If the voltage difference is greater than 1.5 volts, a high resistance in the circuit exists which must be found and corrected.
8. Perform VACUUM DUMP VALVE TEST.
