Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair
NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect wiring connectors in engine compartment.
3. Remove two bolts retaining hood latch control handle and cable and lower cable.
4. Remove two screws retaining bottom of steering instrument panel steering column cover.
5. Remove instrument panel steering column cover by unsnapping two retainers at top corners of instrument panel steering column cover.
6. Remove four bolts retaining steering column opening reinforcement. Remove reinforcement.
7. Remove instrument panel ash receptacle and retainer.
8. Remove steering column shrouds.
9. Remove right and left air conditioning registers.
10. Remove instrument cluster switch panel by unsnapping seven snap-in retainers.
11. Disconnect PRNDL cable from steering column on column shift vehicles.
12. Remove four screws retaining instrument cluster.
13. Pull out instrument cluster far enough to disconnect speedometer and unplug transmission control selector indicator.
14. Remove instrument cluster from vehicle.
15. Remove one nut attaching instrument panel to brake and clutch pedal support.
16. Disconnect wiring from turn signal and windshield wiper switch on steering column.
17. Remove front body inside pillar mouldings.
18. Remove right cowl side panel.
19. Remove right lower insulator, if equipped.
20. Remove two bolts retaining right instrument panel lower corner to cowl side,and left instrument panel lower corner to parking brake control assembly.
21. Remove four screws retaining top of instrument panel.
22. Support instrument panel and reach through openings and from underneath the instrument panel panel disconnect wiring, vacuum lines, radio antenna and heater/air conditioner control cables.
23. Remove instrument panel from vehicle.
24. If replacing instrument panel, transfer all components to new instrument panel.
For installation, follow removal procedures in reverse order.
