L: Speedometer Erratic or Pointer Wavers, Ranger and Explorer
L1 CHECK CONNECTIONS
^ Verify quick connect is properly attached at speedometer head.
^ Are connections good?
Yes
Go to L2.
No
REPAIR or REPLACE bad connections. CHECK for erratic or wavering pointer.
L2 CHECK SPEEDOMETER CABLE AND HOUSING ASSEMBLY
^ Check speedometer cable and housing assembly for kinks or bends in the routing.
^ Check speedometer and cable housing for rough or irregular motion.
^ While speedometer cable and housing assembly is disconnected at transmission check drive tip square for wear.
^ Is speedometer cable and housing assembly free of kinks, bends or wear?
Yes
GO to L3.
No
If speedometer cable and housing assembly is kinked, REPLACE cable. For minor bends, ADJUST cable routing to obtain generous curves, and CHECK for proper connection. If drive tip is worn, REPLACE with a new speedometer cable and housing assembly.
L3 CHECK VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR
^ Check vehicle speed sensor for erratic or noisy operation.
^ Check that shaft in sensor turns freely.
^ Is sensor functioning properly?
Yes
GO to L4.
No
REPLACE vehicle speed sensor. CHECK system for noise.
L4 CHECK DRIVEN GEAR
^ Check driven gear for damage wear or use of incorrect parts.
^ Is driven gear damaged or worn, or have incorrect parts?
Yes
REPLACE driven gear. CHECK speedometer.
No
GO to L5.
L5 CHECK SPEEDOMETER
^ Disconnect speedometer cable and housing and check that magnet shaft in speedometer turns freely by rotating with a short section of cable core.
^ Does magnet shaft turn freely?
Yes
System OK.
No
REPLACE speedometer. RECHECK speedometer for operation.
