PCM - MIL ON/DTC 332 Set/No Driveability Symptoms

Article No.
96-15-14

07/15/96

^ SURGE - LOW ENGINE LOAD WITH HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY

^ LAMP - "CHECK ENGINE" MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ILLUMINATED - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) 332 STORED IN MEMORY - NO DRIVE CONCERNS - VEHICLES WITH 2.3L ENGINE

LIGHT TRUCK:
1994 RANGER

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 332 concerns.

CALIBRATION:
4-49T-R00, 4-49U-R05, 4-49U-R10

WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

ISSUE:
The following may occur on some vehicles:

^ An engine surge at low engine loads, with high ambient temperatures and humidity. This may be caused by irregular combustion due to large levels of exhaust gas from the Exhaust Gas Recirculator (EGR).

^ The "Check Engine" Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate with no drive concerns. DTC 332 may be stored in continuous memory. This may be caused by moisture contained in the exhaust freezing the EGR valve shut.

ACTION:
Replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The revised PCM will reduce EGR which improves combustion, and will delay enabling of the EGR until the engine has warmed up and vaporized the moisture in the exhaust. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform normal diagnostic procedures as per the 1994 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual.

^ If the surging condition still exists, but is eliminated when EGR is de-activated, replace the PCM with a revised PCM (F4PZ-12A650-UB).

^ During the EEC-IV Self Test, if DTC 332 is present in continuous test with no other DTCs, replace the PCM with a new PCM (F4PZ-12A650-UB).

2. Start the vehicle and perform the EEC-IV Self Test. Confirm the surging condition has been eliminated and that no DTCs are present. If any DTC appears, refer to the 1994 PC/ED for further diagnostic details.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
