Fixed Column With Manual Transmission

Steering Column:





DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove column from vehicle and clamp in suitable vise. Remove breakaway bracket from column.

CAUTION: Clamping is permitted only on bolts welded to tube. Ensure care is taken not to permanently deform tube wall. Permanent deformation may affect column performance during an accident.

2. Remove flange retaining screws to lock housing, then flange and shaft assembly from column.
3. Remove ignition switch from column, then rotate actuator rod upward 90 degrees and remove.
4. Remove attaching screws and retainers that hold lock housing to column tube.
5. Remove lock housing, then loosen attaching bolt that holds toe plate clamp.
6. Remove toe plate and clamp from column.

ASSEMBLY
1. Clamp in a suitable vise.

CAUTION: Clamping is permitted only on bolts welded to tube. Ensure care is taken not to permanently deform tube wall. Permanent deformation may affect column performance during an accident.

2. Install clamp and toe plate on column with rubber end of toe plate facing toward bottom of column.
3. Position lock housing assembly on column.
4. Install retaining screws that hold lock housing to column tube. Torque to 6-8 ft lb.
5. Rotate ignition to ON position, then install actuator rod and turn lock cylinder to LOCK position.

Assembling Ignition Switch:





6. To set ignition switch, position a wire in the outer surface of switch. Move through positions until wire drops down into slot. This will allow full movement through switching positions.
7. Position ignition switch on column over actuating rod, then install retaining nuts and remove wire in housing.
8. Install flange, shaft assembly and lock housing on assembly. Torque to 6-8 ft lb.
9. Install lower bearing retainer in bottom of steering column. Torque to 12-20 ft lb.
10. Install breakaway bracket on steering column. Torque to 13-28 ft lb.
11. Install column in vehicle.
