Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and move out of the way.2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove:
a. Engine air cleaner outlet tube.
b. Engine air cleaner.
c. PCV closure hose.
4. Remove throttle body.
5. Disconnect fuel lines.
6. Mark vacuum line location and remove lines.
7. Disconnect upper radiator hose and heater water hoses and move out of the way.
8. Disconnect Ignition Control Module (ICM) electrical connector. Remove two coil retaining nuts and remove ignition coil mounting strap.
9. Remove throttle body.
10. Mark distributor housing to block and note rotor position. Remove ignition wires from spark plugs and locating studs. Remove distributor.
NOTE: Determine which type of air conditioning refrigerant is used in the vehicle to be serviced and follow procedure for that specific refrigerant.
11. Recover refrigerant from air conditioning system.
12. Disconnect liquid line at condenser and suction hose from accumulator.
13. Remove bolt securing air conditioning hose assembly to compressor housing and remove hose assembly from vehicle.
14. Plug or cap all openings in the air conditioning system to keep dirt, foreign material and excess moisture out of the system.
15. If left cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
a. Remove drive belt.
b. Remove three power steering pump bracket attaching bolts and one nut. Remove power steering pump, power steering pump support and power steering pressure hoses as an assembly. Place assembly aside in a position to prevent fluid leakage.
c. Remove engine oil dipstick tube attaching nut from exhaust manifold stud. Remove oil level indicator tube from exhaust manifold.
d. Remove fuel line retaining bracket bolt from front of cylinder head.
16. If cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
a. Remove drive belt.
b. Disconnect wiring from generator.
c. Remove three generator bracket and adjusting arm retaining bolts. Remove generator/bracket assembly from vehicle.
d. Remove oil separator hose from rocker arm cover oil fill adapter.

18. Remove exhaust inlet pipe or pipes and exhaust manifolds.
19. Remove valve covers.
20. Loosen rocker arm bolts enough to allow the rocker arm to be lifted off the push rod and rotated to one side.
21. Remove push rods. Identify the position of each rod. The push rods should be installed in their original position during re-assembly.
NOTE: Regardless of which cylinder head is being removed, the No. 3 cylinder intake valve push rod must be removed to allow removal of intake manifold.
22. Remove intake manifold.
23. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts.
24. Remove cylinder heads.
25. Remove head gaskets and discard.
