Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, relieve fuel system pressure, then drain cooling system into suitable container.
2. Scribe hood hinge locations and remove hood from vehicle.
3. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly.
4. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from radiator.
5. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over fan.
6. Remove radiator and fan shroud.
7. Lift drive belt tensioner by rotating it, then remove accessory drive belt.
8. Loosen nut on fan clutch using Fan Clutch holding tool No. T84T-6312-C and Fan Clutch nut wrench tool No. T84T-6312-D or equivalents, then remove assembled fan blade and clutch.

NOTE:The Fan clutch has lefthand threads. Nut must be turned clockwise for removal.

9. Recover refrigerant from A/C system, then disconnect liquid line at condenser and suction hose from accumulator.
10. Remove A/C hose assembly to compressor bolt, then remove hose assembly from vehicle.
11. Plug all A/C openings to avoid dirt, foreign material and excess moisture from entering A/C system.
12. Remove A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts and bracket with compressor and power steering pump still attached and set aside ensure not to damage hoses.
13. Disconnect heater hoses at intake manifold and water pump.
14. Remove dash panel ground cables from cylinder block.
15. Relieve fuel system pressure, then disconnect both fuel lines at chassis to engine connections.
16. All models with an EGR will need to remove EGR tube to be able to set kickdown cable to one side and be able to secure to steering column.
17. Disconnect two delta PFE hoses from EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube.
18. Loosen EGR tube flare nut at EGR valve, then remove EGR tube bolt at exhaust manifold and remove EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube. If necessary, remove sensor retaining bolts, then sensor.
19. Disconnect accelerator control splash shield and cable at throttle body, then if equipped, cruise control cable.
20. Mark and disconnect all vacuum lines from rear of intake manifold.
21. Disconnect fuel charging wiring from engine control sensor wiring at three places on top right of right valve cover, then from oxygen sensor connector.
22. Remove distributor, then place manual transmission in 4th gear or automatic transmission in Park.
23. Raise and support vehicle, then remove engine front support to crossmember attaching nuts.
24. Remove transmission oil cooler clip holding transmission cooling lines to right side of engine block.
25. Disconnect exhaust pipes at exhaust manifolds.
26. Disconnect battery to starter relay cable, then remove starter.
27. On manual transmissions, remove clutch housing attaching bolts with transmission, then disconnect clutch master cylinder at clutch housing.
28. On automatic transmissions, remove transmission housing cover and disconnect flywheel from torque converter.
29. Remove converter housing to engine block bolts and adapter plate to converter housing bolt. Lower vehicle.
30. On all models, attach engine lifting tool, then position jack under transmission. Raise engine slightly and carefully pull it from transmission. Lift engine out of engine compartment so engine rear plate is not bent or components damaged.
31. Reverse procedure to install.
