Installation

Water Pump:

NOTE: Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads before installation except those requiring special sealant.

1. Clean gasket surface on timing cover and water pump carefully.

CAUTION: Use care as aluminum gouges easily.

2. Position a new gasket on water pump sealing surface using Gasket and Trim Adhesive to hold gasket in position.

3. Install water pump on timing cover and hand start 11 attaching bolts. Tighten to specifications on accompanying chart.
4. Connect lower radiator hose to water pump.
5. Connect heater water hose to water pump.
6. Install water pump pulley and hand-tighten four attaching bolts.
7. Install Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor mounting bracket with assembled A/C compressor, power steering pump and three bolts. Tighten bolts to 40-54 N.m (29-40 ft-lb).
8. Install water pump pulley and four bolts, hand-tight.

CAUTION: Make sure that belt is properly seated on the pulleys. One revolution of the engine with an incorrectly seated belt may snap the belt cords.

9. Lift drive belt tensioner and slide drive belt under tensioner pulley. Release drive belt tensioner to rest pulley on drive belt.
10. Tighten water pump pulley bolts to 21-28 N.m (16-21 ft-lb).
11. Install fan shroud. Install fan guard if equipped.
12. Install engine air cleaner outlet tube.

CAUTION: This engine has aluminum components and requires a special corrosion-inhibiting coolant formulation to avoid radiator damage.

13. Fill and bleed cooling system with proper coolant mixture.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.

14. Connect battery ground cable.
15. Run engine and check for coolant leaks.
