Tilt Column With Automatic Transmission

Steering Column:

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove column from vehicle and clamp in suitable vise. Remove breakaway bracket from column.

CAUTION: Clamping is permitted only on bolts welded to tube. Ensure care is taken not to permanently deform tube wall. Permanent deformation may affect column performance during an accident.

2. Depress two locking tabs then remove pivot pin and shift lever. Remove attaching screws and lower bearing retainer from bottom of steering column.
3. Install tilt lever into pawl lever, then remove two Torx(R) head pivot bolts from column head.
4. Using tilt lever, gradually release spring pressure from tilt spring. Then disengage tilt head lock levers and remove tilt head along with steering shaft column.
5. Remove tilt spring from casting on lock housing.
6. Drill out shift tube retaining rivet with suitable tool.
7. Withdraw shift tube from bottom of column.
8. Remove ignition switch from column, then rotate actuator rod upward 90 degrees and remove.
9. Remove shift detent.
10. Remove attaching screws and retainers that hold lock housing to column tube.
11. Slide lock housing forward then remove washer and selector lever shift socket from column tube.
12. Remove lock housing, then loosen attaching bolt that holds toe plate clamp.
13. Remove toe plate and clamp from column.
14. Remove weather seal from column.

ASSEMBLY
1. Clamp in a suitable vise.

CAUTION: Clamping is permitted only on bolts welded to tube. Ensure care is taken not to permanently deform tube wall. Permanent deformation may affect column performance during an accident.

2. Install weather seal in column outer tube.
3. Install clamp and toe plate on column with rubber end of toe plate facing toward bottom of column.
4. Position lock housing assembly on column.
5. Slide lock housing forward then install washer and selector lever shift socket in column tube.
6. Connect shift detent torquing to 3.3-5.3 ft lb, then install retaining screws that holds lock housing to column tube. Torque to 6-8 ft lb.
7. Rotate ignition to ON position, then install actuator rod and turn lock cylinder to LOCK position.

Assembling Ignition Switch:

8. To set ignition switch, position a wire in the outer surface of switch. Move through positions until wire drops down into slot. This will allow full movement through switching positions.
9. Position ignition switch on column over actuating rod, then install retaining nuts and remove wire in housing.
10. Install shift tube through bottom of column tube, then line up shift socket and shift tube holes and drill new rivet through holes.
11. Install spring, head and steering shaft assembly into lock housing and column tube.
12. Position steering shaft and tilt head so that release lever engages retaining pin at first notch.
13. Push down tilt head and align head with lock housing. Lubricate pivot bolt. Torque to 9-11 ft lb.
14. Install lower bearing retainer in bottom of steering column. Torque to 12-20 ft lb.
15. Position shift lever in shift socket and install new pivot pin.
16. Install breakaway bracket on steering column. Torque to 13-28 ft lb.
17. Install column in vehicle.
