Transmission Noisy, Other Than Valve Resonance
TRANSMISSION NOISY, OTHER THAN VALVE RESONANCE
Verify Noise
1. Check for gear noise to verify if within normal range.
2. If there is abnormal gear noise, proceed to Linkage Check.
Linkage Check
1. Check linkage for proper adjustment, wear, or damage.
2. If linkage is satisfactory, proceed to Fluid Check.
3. If linkage is improperly adjusted, worn, or damaged, service, replace, and/or adjust linkage as necessary.
Fluid Check
1. Check fluid for proper level and/or contamination.
2. If fluid level is satisfactory, proceed to Stall Test.
3. If fluid level is low, add specified fluid to bring level within cross-hatched area at operating temperature.
4. If fluid is contaminated, disassemble, clean, and service transmission, flushing torque converter and cooler.
Stall Test
1. Perform Stall Test, Stall Speed Test and if noise stops, proceed to Noise Check.
2. If noise does not stop, examine torque converter and pump, servicing or replacing as necessary. Also check for loose torque converter to flywheel housing bolts or nuts.
Noise Check
1. Run transmission in all gears and check for noise. If noise does not stop in any gear, proceed to Speedometer Gear.
2. If noise stops in Low and R only, service forward planetary and/ or one-way clutch.
3. If noise stops in 2, High, and R only, service reverse planetary.
4. If noise stops in High only, service both planetaries.
Speedometer Gear
1. Remove speedometer gear and check for noise. If noise stops, replace speedometer gear.
2. If noise does not stop, check extension housing bushing, seal or propeller shaft, servicing or replacing as necessary.
