DESCRIPTION
The Electronic Ignition System (EI Low Data Rate), formerly called DIS, replaces the distributor to allow more precise control of ignition spark.

OPERATION
The EI system operates by receiving a Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP)signal provided by the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) at the Ignition Control Module (ICM). The ICM sends the PIP signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The ICM also produces an Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) signal to indicate a failure and provide a tachometer signal. The PCM sends a Spark Output (SPOUT) signal containing timing advance or retard information. The ICM processes the SPOUT signal to decide which coils to fire.
