Timing Cover: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system and crankcase.
2. Remove air cleaner outlet tube, then fan shroud.
3. Lift drive belt tensioner by rotating it and remove accessory drive belts.
4. Loosen nut on fan clutch using Fan Clutch Holding tool No. T84T-6312-C and Fan Clutch Nut Wrench tool No. T84T-6312-D or equivalents.

NOTE: Fan clutch has lefthand threads, nut must be turned clockwise for removal. Remove assembled fan blade and fan clutch.

5. Remove water pump pulley.
6. Disconnect electrical connection at alternator, then remove alternator.
7. Proceed as follows:
a. Recover refrigerant from A/C system, then disconnect liquid line at condenser and suction hose from accumulator.
b. Remove A/C hose assembly to compressor bolt, then remove hose assembly from vehicle.
c. Plug all A/C openings to avoid dirt, foreign material and excess moisture from entering A/C system.
d. Remove A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts and bracket with compressor and power steering pump still attached and set aside ensure not to damage hoses, then remove right and left engine front insulator support bracket to right and left front engine support insulator nuts.
8. Remove distributor assembly from vehicle.

WARNING: Distributor will break if not removed.

9. On models with automatic transmission and A/C, remove compressor bracket.
10. On all models, remove crankshaft pulley and damper. Front cover can be removed with water pump intact; do not remove bolts 11 through 15.
11. Remove oil pan. Disconnect oil level sensor, if equipped.
12. Lower vehicle and remove lower radiator hose, then water pump, if required.
13. Remove front cover, then front cover. Discard old gasket.
14. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten cover bolts to 13-16 ft. lbs.
