ISSUE:
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may turn on or flash intermittently and set a Continuous Code 124 on some vehicles. This may be due to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) incorrectly calculating the vehicle's engine load during light throttle cruises or decelerations.

ACTION:
Replace the PCM with a revised level PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details. Replace the radiator cap on 1992-93 vehicles only.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform the EEC-IV Self Test. If Code 124 appears, replace the PCM. Refer to the PCM Application Chant in this article for the correct service part number. Refer to the appropriate year Aerostar Service Manual, Page 03-14-9, for removal and installation details.

2. On 1992-93 vehicles, replace the 13 psi radiator cap with a 16 psi radiator cap to change the radiators' operating temperature to meet the requirements of the revised PCM.

3. Test drive the vehicle and perform the EEC-IV Self Test. Confirm that there are no DTC's. If any codes appear, refer to the 1995 Engine Emission Diagnosis Manual for further assistance.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modification Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
