WINDNOISE - NEAR THE DOOR IN THE A-PILLAR - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 6/30/95

LIGHT TRUCK:
1994-95 AEROSTAR

This TSB is being republished in its entirety to include 1995 model year vehicles.

ISSUE:
A windnoise may be heard at the A-pillar in some vehicles. This may be caused by incomplete sealing at the A-pillar.

ACTION:
Install a foam sealant into the lower section of the A-pillar to seal an air leak in the A-pillar. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

RIGHT SIDE

1. Remove the three (3) screws retaining the A-pillar trim moulding. Pull the A-pillar moulding to gain access to the wire stay and remove.

2. Place a small piece of vacuum hose into the hole for the wire stay and test drive the vehicle to verify the noise is coming from the A-pillar. If the noise is coming from the A-pillar, proceed to Step 3. If the noise is not coming from the A-pillar, refer to the appropriate model year Aerostar Service Manual for additional diagnostics.





3. Install expanding foam sealer into the A-pillar through the wire stay hole. Refer to Figure 1.

NOTE:
ENOUGH EXPANDING FOAM SHOULD BE USED TO FILL AN 8 OZ CUP. NOTE THE TIME IT TAKES TO FILL THE CUP AND USE THIS TIME WHEN FILLING THE A-PILLAR. USE COMPLETE TUBE OF 3M PANEL FOAM PER SIDE AT 10 OZ.

4. Reinstall the wire stay and the A-pillar moulding.





5. Allow the foam sealer to skin before driving the vehicle. Refer to the Foam Skin Time Chart for the proper times.

LEFT SIDE

1. Remove the three (3) screws retaining the A-pillar trim moulding. Pull the A-pillar moulding to gain access to the A-pillar hole. Do not try to completely remove the moulding.

2. Place a small piece of vacuum hose into the hole and test drive the vehicle to verify the noise is coming from the A-pillar. If the noise is coming from the A-pillar, proceed to Step 3. It the noise is not coming from the A-pillar, refer to the appropriate model year Aerostar Service Manual for additional diagnostics.

3. Install expanding foam sealer into the A-pillar through the lowest access hole.

NOTE:
ENOUGH EXPANDING FOAM SHOULD BE USED TO FILL AN 8 OZ CUP. NOTE THE TIME IT TAKES TO FILL THE CUP AND USE THIS TIME WHEN FILLING THE A-PILLAR.

4. Reinstall A-pillar moulding.

5. Allow the foam sealer to skin before driving the vehicle. Refer to the following Foam Skin Time Chant for the proper times.
