Removal
NOTE: The brake shoe and lining should be replaced in full axle sets only. Do not replace worn rear brake shoe and lining on only one side of the vehicle.
REMOVAL
1. Remove sufficient brake fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir (2K478) to allow for brake fluid displacement by the caliper pistons.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Using an eight-inch C-clamp, position the clamp frame on the inboard side of the rear disc brake caliper housing. Position the clamp screw on the outboard brake shoe and lining backing plate.
CAUTION: Do not press against the brake shoe and lining spring clip. To avoid damage to the spring clip, compress piston only enough to free the caliper (about 0.7mm [1/16 inch]).
5. Remove the C-clamp.
CAUTION: Do not remove the guide pins or guide pin boots unless a problem is suspected. The guide pins are meant to be sealed for life and are not serviced. Guide pins must be clean and lubricated with a special silicone grease. Other greases may swell the guide pin boots, allow subsequent contamination and cause accelerated corrosion or wear of the pin slide mechanism.
6. Remove the caliper bolts.
7. Work the rear disc brake caliper off the rear disc brake rotor (2C026) and rear wheel disc brake adapter (2C220).
CAUTION: Do not allow the rear disc brake caliper (2552) to hang by the rear brake hose. Provide a suitable support.
8. Remove and discard the shoe slippers.
9. Remove the outboard brake shoe and lining by pressing it in enough to release the locating lug at one end, swinging it up and releasing the other end.
10. Remove the inboard brake shoe and lining by tilting it enough to release the retainer spring from the caliper piston.
11. Repeat Steps 3-9 for the opposite wheel.
