Removal







REMOVAL

WARNING: Residual pressure remains in fuel system after engine is shut off. This could result in injury or fire when fuel lines are disconnected. Disconnect inertia fuel shutoff switch and crank engine a minimum of 15 seconds to depressurize system.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and secure out of the way.
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Remove the upper and lower intake manifolds and valve covers.
4. If left cylinder head is being removed, perform the following steps:
a. Lift drive belt tensioner by rotating it counterclockwise and remove drive belt.
b. Remove four bolts securing air conditioning compressor to bracket and one screw securing air conditioner manifold tube to upper intake manifold and set compressor to one side.
c. Remove A/C compressor mounting bracket with assembled power steering pump and position to one side.
d. Remove the spark plugs.
5. If the right cylinder head is being removed, perform the following steps:
a. Lift drive belt tensioner by rotating it counterclockwise and remove drive belt.
b. Remove the alternator and alternator mounting bracket.
c. Remove the ignition coil and assembled bracket.
d. Remove the spark plugs.
6. Remove the exhaust inlet pipe, exhaust manifold, RH and exhaust manifold, LH.
7. Remove the rocker arm shaft assembly. Remove the valve tappets, and place them in a rack for installation in the same position.
8. Remove the cylinder head attaching bolts and discard.
9. Remove the cylinder heads.
10. Remove and discard the head gasket.
