TRANSMISSlON - 4R44E/4R55E - SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR ORANGE SERVICE - TAGGED TRANSMISSIONS - VEHICLES WITH 2.3L, 3.0L AND 4.0L ENGINES
LIGHT TRUCK:
1995 EXPLORER, RANGER
ISSUE:
The 4R44E transmission will be installed in 2.3L and 3.0L Rangers and the 4R55E will be installed in 4.0L Explorers and Rangers. Starting November 14, 1994, selected transmissions have an orange "DO NOT SERVICE" tag on the fluid pan. The orange tag refers to this TSB (94-25) and provides a toll free telephone number to be used by all U.S. and Canadian dealers for further service direction. (Not applicable outside the U.S. or Canada.)
ACTION:
Prior to December 22, 1995, do not disassemble these tagged 4R44E/4R55E transmissions. Perform the following diagnostic steps, record your findings and contact Ford Motor Company at the toll free number listed below if there is a concern involving one of these orange tagged transmissions. After December 22, 1995, follow the Service Manual diagnosis and repair procedures.
If there is a service concern involving one of the orange "Service-tagged transmissions" (Figure 1), call the toll free number between the hours of 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM EST Monday through Friday. (A recorder is on 24 hours per day.)
Use the following procedure when servicing the orange tagged transmissions:
1. Check and record the transmission fluid level and condition.
a. If low, fill to the proper level and check for a leak.
b. If a leak is the only concern, call the toll free number prior to the repair.
2. Check the vehicle harness connectors for proper installation at the Transmission Range Sensor (TR), Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and Transmission 16 pin case connector.
3. Perform EEC system Quick Test and record all codes.
4. If no fault codes are present, go to Step 5. If fault codes are present, perform the required pinpoint tests as directed in the Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnosis Manual for any fault codes received. Repair all NON-transmission codes and verify transmission symptom still exists.
5. If the transmission symptom exists, install Rotunda Transmission Tester 007-0086C and follow the appropriate tester instructions to determine if the concern is internal to the transmission.
NOTE:
THE TRANSMISSION TESTER (ROTUNDA 007-0085C) MUST BE USED WITH TRANSCABLE (007-00106) ALONG WITH TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR CABLE (007-00086).
6. If the transmission requires service, call Ford Motor Company toll free at 1-800-888-5199 between 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM EST (All U.S. and Canadian Dealers Only).
NOTE:
DO NOT DISASSEMBLE ANY TRANSMISSION PRIOR TO CALLING THIS TOLL FREE NUMBER.
All diagnostic information (fluid level and condition, EEC fault codes, transmission tester results, transmission concern and transmission tag information) must be recorded before calling Ford Motor Company.
