Valve Clearance: Adjustments

1. Crank engine with ignition Off, using an auxiliary starter switch.

2. Mark crankshaft damper at two locations, approximately 120 degrees apart, so that, with the timing mark, the damper is divided into three equal sections, Fig. 19.
3. With No. 1 piston on TDC at end of compression stroke, tighten rocker arm bolts of No. 1 intake and exhaust valves to specifications.

4. Slowly supply pressure to bleed down tappet until plunger is completely bottomed against tappet bleed down wrench tool No. T70P-6513-A, or equivalent, Fig. 20.
5. Hold tappet in position and check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem tip with suitable feeler gauge.
6. If clearance is less than specifications, install shorter pushrod.
7. If clearance is greater than specifications, install longer pushrod.
8. Repeat procedure, turn crankshaft with auxiliary starter switch, one third turn at a time in direction of rotation while adjusting valve in firing order sequence of 1-5-3-6-2-4.
