^ SPEED CONTROL - LAMP ILLUMINATION "FLICKERING" - COLD WEATHER - WHILE TURNING STEERING WHEEL
LIGHT TRUCK:
1995 EXPLORER, RANGER
ISSUE:
The speed control switch illumination may flicker while turning the steering wheel, in cold weather operation, on some vehicles. In addition, the horn operation may be intermittent while turning the steering wheel. When the vehicle is cold, the electrical ground, which passes through the steering column shaft bearings, can become intermittent due to the low temperature condition of the grease within the shaft bearings forming a thin barrier that reduces electrical conductivity.
ACTION:
Install a wired ground through the steering column to the steering wheel switches. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove steering wheel and driver air bag, referring to 1995 Ranger/Explorer Service Manual, Page 11-04A-5. Use Rotunda Steering Wheel Puller, T77F-4220-B1 (Figure 1).
2. Remove air bag sliding contact assembly and install a new air bag sliding contact (-14A664-), referring to 1995 Ranger/Explorer Service Manual, Page 11-04A-21.
3. Remove the wiring harness from steering wheel and replace with a new harness (Figure 2). Review the following:
^ For speed control switch wire harness (F67Z-13N866-AA) procedure, refer to 1995 Ranger/Explorer Service Manual, Page 10-03A-22.
^ On non-speed control vehicles, follow same procedure for horn cord (F67Z-13N866-AA) except for connections to speed control switches.
NOTE:
THE NEW WIRE HARNESS ASSEMBLY HAS AN ADDED GROUND EYELET LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 102 mm (4") FROM THE BLACK 5-PIN CONNECTOR. THIS EYELET MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE STEERING WHEEL USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE, PRIOR TO REASSEMBLY OF THE BACK COVER ONTO THE STEERING WHEEL.
a. Drill a 3.572 mm (9/64") diameter hole from the back side of the steering wheel armature (Figure 3).
b. Attach this eyelet with a 8-18x1/2" screw (Figure 4). Reassemble back cover to steering wheel and route new wire harness, referring to the procedure in 1995 Ranger/Explorer Service Manual, Page 10-03A-22 (Figure 5).
c. Reinstall steering wheel and driver air bag into the vehicle, referring to 1995 Ranger/Explorer Service Manual, Page 11-04A-6.
NOTE:
ATTACH STEERING WHEEL TO STEERING COLUMN WITH A NEW RETAINING SCREW, N807493-S101. TORQUE TO 34-46 N-m (25-34 LB-FT).
d. Verify speed control switch illumination and horn are operative.
