Front Drive Axle
Axle Identification
The Dana 28 and 35 axles are equipped with automatic or optional manual locking hubs.
The front axle is of the integral carrier housing hypoid-gear type, in which the centerline of the drive pinion is mounted above the centerline of the ring gear. (The ring gear and drive pinion are smaller on the Dana 28; otherwise the Dana 28 and 35 axles are identical.)
The differential carrier is made of aluminum and mounts directly to the left axle arm assembly. To remove the RH axle stub shaft, the carrier must be removed from the support arm to release internal C-clip.
The drive pinion gear shaft is supported by two opposed tapered roller bearings which are assembled in the carrier housing.
The differential case assembly is supported by two opposed tapered roller bearings and cups, which are retained in the housing by removable caps.
The left axle arm assembly also acts as the housing cover. Axle identification is on a paper tag on rear face of RH axle arm. A manufacturing date code and a complete part number is stamped on the left carrier arm between the fill plug and axle end.
