Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Starter Motor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Disconnect starter cable, then disconnect solenoid connector by pulling on the connector shell only, do not pull on wire.
4. Remove upper and lower starter bolts, then remove starter.
5. Reverse procedures to install, noting the following:
a. Torque starter bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs.
b. Torque starter cable to solenoid nut to 80-124 inch lbs.

NOTE: Vehicle specific information about operation, stored in PCM using battery backed up memory, may be lost when battery is disconnected. If this occurs poor engine performance, stalling and other driveability problems may occur. It may be necessary to drive the vehicle for up to 10 miles to allow the PCM to relearn this information.
