INTERIOR TRIM - LX TRIM PANEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES - SERVICE TIPS

LIGHT TRUCK:
1995 WINDSTAR

ISSUE:
Integral foam blocks are incorporated on the sliding door trim panel of vehicles equipped with the "LX" trim package. These foam blocks provide improved protection for the 2nd row RH LX bucket seat occupant.

ACTION:
If vehicles with LX trim level are involved in a collision or sustain other damage to the sliding door assembly in which the foam blocks on the LX trim panel are damaged, the sliding door trim panel MUST be replaced. Remove the panel and fasteners and inspect the foam blocks for damage. If any damage is observed, replace the trim panel (new fasteners are pre-assembled to the replacement trim panel). Refer to the following procedure for service details.

WARNING:
THE FOAM BLOCKS ON THE TRIM PANEL PROVIDE IMPROVED PROTECTION FOR THE 2ND ROW RH LX BUCKET SEAT OCCUPANT.

WARNING:
"LX" TRIM PANELS CANNOT BE REPLACED WITH "GL" LEVEL TRIM PANELS.

CAUTION:
TAKE CARE NOT TO DAMAGE THE FOAM BLOCKS DURING HANDLING.

NOTE:
LX TRIM PANELS REQUIRE THE USE OF THE LX WATERSHIELD.

TRIM PANEL REMOVAL

1. It is recommended that the sliding door assembly is swung open on its front hinges/runners to allow better access to the door trim panel and thus prevent damage to the foam blocks during panel removal. This requires the release of the rear runner from its track. The procedure for releasing the rear runner from its track is covered in the 1995 Windstar Service Manual, Section 01-03.

2. Release the upper glass trim and fasteners.

3. Unscrew and remove the lock "soldier button."

4. Remove the interior door lever and its retaining circlip, Figure 1.

NOTE:
IF A CIRCLIP TOOL IS NOT AVAILABLE, A PIECE OF CLOTH CAN BE WRAPPED OVER THE DOOR HANDLE LEVER PIVOT AND USED TO CATCH THE CIRCLIP WITH A ROPE PULLEY ACTION, FIGURE 1.

5. Remove trim panel and fasteners from the door sheet metal.

TRIM PANEL INSPECTION

1. Inspect trim panel foam blocks for any damage, Figure 2:

a. Check for foam cracking, tearing or denting.

b. Check for foam looseness on trim panel.

2. Trim panel MUST be replaced if foam is damaged.

TRIM PANEL INSTALLATION

1. Verify that fasteners are pre-assembled to the replacement trim panel.

2. Install the trim panel.

3. Install interior door lever and its retaining circlip.

4. Install lock "soldier button."

5. Ensure that fasteners are preassembled to the upper glass trim.

6. Install the upper glass trim.
