DOOR - SHEET MOLDED COMPOSITE DRIVER'S DOOR IN SELECTED VEHICLE TRYOUT - SERVICE PROCEDURE - VEHICLES BUILT 1/15/96 THROUGH 3/1/96

ISSUE:
Selected Econolines built from 1/15/96 to 3/15/96 have been built with a left side (driver's) door manufactured out of Sheet Molded Composite (SMC). SMC is a fiber-reinforced polyester outer skin adhesively bonded to a carryover sheet metal inner panel. This material is similar to the SMC hood material. Each vehicle with an SMC left door will be identified with a sticker (Figure 1) located on the inside of the door.

ACTION:
If minor damage should occur to the outer SMC skin on these doors, standard body shop techniques utilized on the SMC hood should be applied to the door. If the door cannot be repaired using standard procedures, the door must be replaced with a regular steel door. if the door is replaced, the primary door weatherstrip must also be replaced.
