WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.
ISSUE:
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0171 and/or PO174 may be stored in memory. This may be caused by a lean air/fuel mixture.
ACTION:
Inspect vehicle for any hardware faults and repair as required. Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Have the customer complete the Customer Information Worksheet located in Section 3A of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual and be sure the technician working on the vehicle is given a copy.
2. Diagnose and correct all causes of lean air/fuel mixtures. Check the following potential causes:
^ Check for vacuum leaks - all leaks must be repaired
^ Check fuel pressure with engine running and key on/engine oft - repair as required
^ Check for proper thermactor system operation on vehicles so equipped, including diverter valve and bypass valve operation. Upstream air should be turned off during closed loop operation, otherwise secondary air may be detected by an active Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen (HEGO) sensor and lead to false indication of a lean air/fuel mixture
^ Verify the oil fill cap and engine oil level indicator are properly seated
^ Verify the air induction system clamps are tight and there are no unmetered air leaks between the mass air meter and the throttle body. Verify that the foam gasket is correctly positioned between the mass air meter and the air cleaner
3. Follow Pinpoint Tests for DTC P0171 and P0174 starting with Test H41 in the 1996 PC/ED Service Manual. Repair as required.
4. If the concern is still present, reprogram the PCM using Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. Refer to the following PCM Cross Reference Chart for the latest level calibrations.
NOTE:
PCM REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THIS TSB. REFER TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS (PC/ED) SERVICE MANUAL FOR APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES IF PCM HARDWARE CONCERNS EXIST.
Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
