Seat Belt Systems: Adjustments

WARNING: THE SHOULDER BELT SHOULD BE USED ONLY ON THE SHOULDER THAT IS CLOSEST TO THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE BELT SHOULD NEVER BE WORN UNDER THE ARM. IT SHOULD NEVER BE WORN OVER THE INSIDE SHOULDER. IF THE SHOULDER BELT IS NOT USED PROPERLY, THE CHANCES OF INJURY IN A COLLISION GREATLY INCREASE.

SAFETY BELTS, FASTENING
Insert the belt tongue into the proper buckle until a snap is heard and it is felt to latch. Make sure the tongue is securely fastened to the buckle.

SAFETY BELTS, UNFASTENING
1. Push the release button on the buckle. This allows the tongue to unlatch from the buckle.
2. While the belt retracts, guide the tongue to its original position. If the tongue is not guided, it may strike an occupant or part of the vehicle.

SHOULDER PORTION ADJUSTMENT
Pull the lap/shoulder belt from the retractor so that the shoulder portion of the belt crosses the shoulder and chest. Make sure the belt is not twisted. If it is, remove the twist.

OUTBOARD, LAP/SHOULDER

WARNING:
- EACH SEATING POSITION IN THE VEHICLE HAS A SPECIFIC SAFETY BELT ASSEMBLY WHICH CONSISTS OF ONE BUCKLE AND ONE TONGUE. THE SAFETY BELT ASSEMBLY IS DESIGNED TO BE USED AS A PAIR AND IS NOT TO BE USED ACROSS SEATING POSITION.
- MAKE SURE THE LAP PORTION OF THE BELT IS FITTED SNUGLY AND AS LOW AS POSSIBLE AROUND THE HIPS, NOT AROUND THE WAIST. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY INCREASE THE CHANCE OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION.
- IF THE SHOULDER BELT IS OFF YOUR SHOULDER OR ON YOUR UPPER ARM, THERE IS A GREATER RISK OF SEVERE INJURY IN A COLLISION.

On outboard lap/shoulder safety belts, pull up on the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion to a snug fit. Make sure the belt is as low on hips as possible.

Center safety belts are equipped with manually adjusted lap belts for center seat occupants. Insert the rear safety belt tongue into the proper buckle until a snap is heard. Pull on both sides of safety belt to make sure the buckle is latched. Pull up on the end of the rear safety belt to tighten the lap portion to a snug fit. Make sure safety belt is as low on the hips as possible.

CENTER, LAP ONLY
A lap belt without retractor is installed for the center seat of the front and rear three-passenger bench seat. This safety belt can be shortened and fastened when not in use. To use the safety belt, tip the tongue at a right angle to the belt and pull the belt over the lap until the tongue reaches the buckle.
