Keyless Entry Transmitter: Description and Operation
Transmitter, Remote Entry
The electronic door lock control system includes two three-button (hand-held) remote entry transmitters. Remote entry transmitters are reprogrammable and all remote entry transmitters for the vehicle must be set at the same time. When troubleshooting the system, one remote entry transmitter is essential to perform tests.
To unlock the driver's door:
Press the UNLOCK button on the remote entry transmitter, which is programmed into the electronic door lock control processor once.
This will also activate the memory seats, if equipped on Explorers, and disarm the anti-theft system.
To unlock all doors:
Press the UNLOCK button on the remote entry transmitter a second time, within five seconds of the first unlock.
NOTE: If more than five seconds have elapsed since the first press of the UNLOCK button, pressing the UNLOCK button again will only unlock the driver's door.
To lock all doors and arm the anti-theft system:
Press LOCK button on the remote transmitter once.
To confirm that the doors have locked and that the anti-theft system has armed:
Press LOCK button again, from one to five seconds after the first press. The horn will chirp once if the doors have locked and all doors and the liftgate glass are closed so that the theft system is arming. The horn will chirp twice if the doors have locked. If one of the doors, liftgate or liftgate glass are open, a door ajar signal from the GEM module will prevent arming of the system.
To activate the personal security alarm:
Press the red PANIC button on any transmitter. The horn will beep and the headlamps will flash for a maximum of three minutes.
To deactivate the personal security alarm:
Press the red PANIC button again on any transmitter or turn the ignition key ON.
NOTE: The remote entry features will not function when the ignition switch is in the RUN or ACCESSORY position.
Programming Transmitter(s)
When the customer has purchased additional transmitters, or has lost a transmitter, the customer MUST bring to the dealer ALL of the transmitters for the vehicle. The dealer must then reprogram ALL of the transmitters at the same time. The receiver assembly module erases all previous transmitters from memory, when the transmitters are programmed or reprogrammed. The receiver assembly module can store up to four transmitters in memory.
To program (or reprogram) transmitter(s) into the remote/keyless entry module, perform the following steps.
1. Make sure that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered.
2. Turn the ignition key from OFF to RUN five times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN.
If the RAP system has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and then unlock all doors.
3. Press any button on a transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each transmitter has been programmed. If the vehicle has memory seats, look on the back of the transmitters and make sure that transmitter No. 1 is programed first, and that transmitter No. 2 is programmed second.
If the door locks do not respond for any transmitter, wait a few seconds and press the button again. If the door locks still fail to respond, go to Pinpoint Test A .
4. Turn ignition OFF (or wait up to five minutes after Step 2) to exit program mode. If a new set of transmitters have been programmed (or reprogrammed), the remote control alarm and door lock system will lock and unlock all doors one last time to confirm.
