LIFTGATE SUPPORT CYLINDER LOWER BRACKET MODIFICATIONAffected Vehicles
1996 EXPLORER AND MOUNTAINEERS BUILT AT THE LOUISVILLE ASSEMBLY PLANT FROM JUNE 5, 1996 THROUGH JUNE 7, 1996
Inspection
1. Remove pushpin from right-hand rear wheel-lip moulding. See Figure 1.
2. Pull moulding slightly away from lower rear flange of bodyside.
3. Inspect date code on lower rear flange of bodyside. If the date code is "SB06056, SB06066 or SB06076", proceed to "bracket modification." See Figure 2. Release vehicle if date code is other than these three date codes.
Bracket Modification
1. Open the liftgate. Secure the liftgate in an open position.
2. Disconnect the right-hand gas cylinder from its lower mounting.
3. Drill two 3/16 inch diameter holes in the following locations (See Figure 3):
^ Between the upper and middle spot welds on the mounting bracket.
^ Above the lowest spot weld on the mounting bracket.
4. Apply Super Seal F3AZ-19515-SA to the holes.
5. Install pop rivet 380098-S306 into each hole.
6. Wipe off excess Super Seal.
7. Apply silicone sealer to the center of the pop rivet to prevent water from entering body panel through center of rivet.
8. Install gas cylinder.
9. Operate liftgate to verify proper function.
