Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove LH and RH valve covers.
3. Remove lower intake manifold.
4. Lift drive belt tensioner and remove drive belt.
5. If LH cylinder head is being removed, remove A/C compressor/power steering bracket at front of cylinder head, complete with accessories.
6. Remove oil level dipstick and oil level indicator tube.
7. Disconnect alternator wiring harness if RH cylinder head is to be removed. Remove alternator and bracket as an assembly from engine.
8. Raise and support vehicle.
9. Disconnect exhaust manifold from exhaust inlet pipe.
10. Lower vehicle enough to allow access to exhaust manifold bolts through wheelwell openings.
11. Remove inner fender apron pushpins and inner fender aprons.
12. Remove RH and LH exhaust manifolds.
13. Loosen rocker arm bolts so rocker arms can be rotated to the side.
14. Remove pushrods in sequence so they may be installed in their original positions.
15. Remove and discard cylinder head bolts.
16. Lift cylinder head from block and remove head gasket.


INSTALLATION
1. Clean gasket surfaces.
2. Place new gasket over cylinder dowels on cylinder block. Do not apply sealer if a specially treated composition gasket is used.
3. Place cylinder head on block and install new cylinder head bolts.

4. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence, in three steps:
- first to 25-35 ft. lbs.
- then to 45-55 ft. lbs.
= then one additional 1/4 turn.

5. Lubricate ends of pushrods and install in their original positions.
6. Coat rocker arms and seats with suitable SAE 30 engine oil, then rotate rocker arms to their original positions. Tighten rocker arm bolts to specifications.
7. Install RH and LH exhaust manifolds and tighten to specifications.
8. Install fender aprons and pushpins.
9. Connect exhaust manifolds at exhaust inlet pipes.
10. Install generator bracket and accessories.
11. Install drive belt and tensioner.
12. Install A/C compressor/power steering bracket with accessories.
13. Install oil level dipstick and indicator tube.
14. Install lower intake manifold.
15. Install RH and LH valve covers.
