Timing Cover: Service and Repair










Removal

1. Remove engine from vehicle.

2. Remove thermostat bypass hose from water pump.

3. Remove heater hot water tube to water pump hose.

4. Disconnect crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector and position engine control sensor wiring aside.

5. Remove CKP sensor bolts and crankshaft position sensor (CKP sensor).






6. Use three 8mm x 1.25mm x 10cm bolts to install Crankshaft Damper Remover T58P-6316-D on the crankshaft vibration damper.

7. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper.

8. Remove the oil pan bolts, oil pan, and oil pan gasket.

NOTE: Remove the engine front cover and water pump as an assembly.

9. Remove engine front cover bolts and engine front cover.

10. Remove and discard the engine front cover gasket.

11. Use Strap Wrench D85L-6000-A or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and the water pump pulley.

12. Remove the water pump bolts and remove water pump from engine front cover.

Installation

1. Use Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A and a suitable plastic or wooden scraper to clean the engine front cover and cylinder block gasket surfaces.

2. Install a new crankshaft front seal, if necessary.

3. Lubricate the timing chain and sprockets with SAE 50 engine oil meeting Ford specification WSE-M2C908-A.

4. Coat the engine front cover and cylinder block gasket surfaces with Gasket and Trim Adhesive F3AZ-19B508-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M11P17-A.

5. Position the engine front cover gasket to the cylinder block.

6. Position the engine front cover on the cylinder block and loosely install engine front cover bolts.

7. Coat both sides of the water pump gasket with Silicone Gasket and Sealant F6AZ-19562-AA meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A6 and position the gasket on the engine front cover.

8. Position water pump to engine front cover and install water pump bolts. Tighten to 20-28 Nm (15-20 lb-ft).

9. Install water pump pulley on hub and install water pump pulley bolts.

10. Use Strap Wrench D85L-6000-A or suitable equivalent to hold the water pump pulley. Tighten water pump pulley bolts to 16-25 Nm (12-18 lb-ft).






11. Install Crankshaft Seal Replacer/Cover Aligner T88T-6701-A on crankshaft.

12. Hold Crankshaft Seal Replacer/Cover Aligner T88T-6701-A in position while tightening engine front cover bolts to 16-25 Nm (12-18 lb-ft). Remove tool.

13. Install the oil pan.

14. Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C93-B to the sealing surface of the crankshaft vibration damper.

15. Apply Silicone Gasket and Sealant F6AZ-19562-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A6 to the keyway of the crankshaft vibration damper.

16. Install crankshaft vibration damper on the crankshaft.






17. Install Crankshaft Sprocket and Damper Replacer T52L-6306-AEE on crankshaft to seat crankshaft vibration damper. Remove tool.

18. Install crankshaft vibration damper bolt. Tighten to 149-177 Nm (110-130 lb-ft).

19. Position crankshaft position sensor to engine front cover and install CKP sensor bolts. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).

20. Install heater hot water tube to water pump hose.

21. Install thermostat bypass hose.

22. Install engine in vehicle.

23. Fill the cooling system with coolant.

24. Start the engine and check for leaks.
